Why this guide
iRacing is not a simulator like the others: a subscription, then à la carte purchases, Safety Rating, iRating, strict matchmaking. Everything in it rewards consistency and rigour. Turning up with the reflexes of an arcade game — or even of another simulator — is expensive, in money as much as in hours.
This guide is the 2026 edition of what we would have wanted to read before our own first hours. It holds no car setup, no training programme and no telemetry method: it puts you in the right conditions before you start driving.
